Vaso Salon – Where Curlies Belong on South Beach
Over the weekend, I had a chance to meet and get a haircut from Vaso Spirou, the owner and master hairstylist and colorist at Vaso Salon. Before I met Vaso, I knew she was the curly hair expert. So I came prepared with a lot of questions! But let me start by saying that this haircut was one of the best I’ve ever received. If anyone knows curly hair, it’s Vaso. In fact, 90% of her clientele has curly hair. That should tell you something. Here’s how our convo went…
PGH: More and more curly girls we know want to cut their hair short. Can curlies go short?
Vaso: I love long hair and I find that often time these women who want to go short really just need more shape than anything. Their hair feels heavy and they crave a new look. I tell them to trust me on the length and if they still want to go shorter, to come back the next day and I’ll cut shorter.
PGH: What is the perfect haircut for curly hair?
Vaso: Every curl is different and therfore I feel that every cut needs to be different. In my salon, I customize each haircut, so really, there is no one perfect haircut for curly hair.
PGH: What’s the first thing curly girls should do once they get out of the shower?
Vaso: Fight the urge to towel dry or look at your missed calls on your cell! Go straight for your hair product and apply to soaking wet hair. This is a must if you want to be frizz-free.
PGH: Speaking of hair products, do you have any favs?
Vaso: I love Alfaparf Semi Di Lino Diamante products. I’ve been using this Italian line for 10 years and it’s fantastic!
PGH: Can you give us some tips on diffusing?
Vaso: I recommend setting your blow-dryer on high heat, medium speed. This way your curl has more time to form. Don’t use your hands! Instead, use the diffuser to cup each section of hair. You can put the diffuser up to your scalp but be carfeul not to burn yourself. Stick to an up-and-down movement instead of left-and-right to prevent frizz.
PGH: You have naturally curly hair but do you ever go straight?
Vaso: I go straight sometimes but I just feel more like myself in my curly hair. It fits me better and curly hair rocks! I am lucky too because my finance likes my curly hair better than straight.
