itsa10miracle_leavein_4oz_250hAs you probably know from previous posts, I’ve been wearing my PGH straight lately. All the heat styling tools take a toll and I’ve been on the hunt for a product to keep my hair healthy and strong.  Enter It’s a 10 Miracle Leave in Conditioner. This product was recommended to me by five different stylists at five different salons, so I figured it had to be somewhat good, right?

On the bottle, it claims it does the following instantly:
    1. Repairs dry, damage hair
    2. Adds shine
    3. Detangles
    4. Controls frizz
    5. Seals & protects hair color
    6. Prevents split ends
    7. Stops hair breakage
    8. Creates silkiness
    9. Enhances natural body
    10. Flat iron spray & thermal protector

Sounds like a pretty good all-in-1 solution! I’ve been using It’s a 10 for about 2 weeks and so far I really like it. My hair is still looking healthy, shiny and I think it’s even getting easier to style.  I reccommend this to anyone who has dry, damaged or chemically treated hair.

permanent-laser-hair-removalI had my second laser hair removal treatment yesterday and it didn’t hurt nearly as much as my first one! And in about 10 days the hair will start falling out again. (Yipee!!) If you’re just tuning in, you may want to read about my first treatment here.

I asked my doctor if people ever get the brazilian laser treatment without using numbing cream. She said she has one patient who doesn’t use the cream and never even flinches! That’s just crazy…certain spots are very sensitive. I highly recommend the numbing cream.

My doctor said I should experience more of a rash this time.  I just keep loading hydrocortisone on. Last time, I got a slight rash but it didn’t even itch…my skin was just red.

Overall, laser hair removal was a great decision. I’m really happy. Remember how I told you I get bad in-grown hairs because my hair is so thick? I already see a difference! Much less now.

So make sure to check back in 6 weeks for treatment #3 update. 2 down, 4 more to go!

hanaI recently went to NYC for my sister’s bachelorette party. I thought the entire weekend was on lock when I realized, “oh crap, I can’t bring my hair products on the plane.” Being the last-minute-packer that I am, I neglected to buy any travel size hair mousse. Only one thing could be done..

If you guessed wear it straight, you’re correct! I never wear my PGH straight -  it takes too much time! But I had no other choice. I had to do what I had to do.

That’s when I turned to my Hana Professional Flat Iron and said, “you’re coming with me.” I also packed a bottle of Hana Shineshield – a lightweight leave-in treatment made with jojoba that strengthens and protects your hair from heat styling, UV rays & everyday stress.

hair picOverall, both the iron and shineshield did me proud. My locks stayed straight, shiny and frizz-free all weekend long! From one bachelorette event to another, my hair remained picture worthy – just take a look for yourself.

Here’s what I did to style:

    1. Out of shower, combed through several drops of Hana Shineshield

    2. Slept on wet hair (left it down, not in a bun)

    3. Next morning, ran blow dryer through for 5 minutes

    4. Applied  a couple more drops of Shineshield to frizzy ends

    5. Ran Hana flat iron through locks – took about 30 minutes total

I’m not the only fan of Hana. Looks like Modern Salon Mag and Marie Claire are too! For more product info or to purchase, click here.

Have you head about Nair’s new Shower Power? It’s their new hair removal water-repellent cream that you use in the shower.

I haven’t used it yet, but was very interested in giving it a try. So, I just did some quick research to see what people are saying about this new product.

Check out this post on Naturallycurly.com. This one person who wrote in said Shower Power made her bleed! It didn’t get good reviews on About.com either. However, this one blogger is saying Shower Power is her new BFF.

Ah! Guess I’m going to have to try this stuff out for myself. Stay tuned for my review. And in the meantime, let us know if you give Nair’s Shower Power thumbs up or down.

Over the weekend I met with the professionals at Dermacare, a laser and skin clinic down the street from my apartment in Miami, and finally made a big decision….I signed up for laser hair removal!

This is something I have been contemplating forever. The main reason I decided to give it a go is because I get really bad in-grown hairs. I think it comes with PGH territory. I’ve tried every product on the market and nothing seems to help. The bumps are embarrassing and don’t ever go away for good.

I am going to document my experience here on PGH.  And please note that I am paying every dollar for the treatment, so my review is going to be completely unbiased.

Have you had laser hair removal…down there…before? Please leave a comment with any advice. I’m going to need it!

Last week, I told you all about my sister’s itchy dry scalp. I gave her a bottle of Eufora’s Urgent Repair Replenishing Treatment and sent her home. Well, she just sent me a text message saying that the product was not strong enough to cure her flakes – but she did find something that did work!

Drumroll please! Neutrogena’s Tgel Daily Control® Dandruff Shampoo. After a couple uses her scalp was back to normal.

Just wanted to let everyone know :)

nanotitaniumLet me introduce you to the Babyliss Pro Nanoa lightweight and  slim flat iron that is only 6 inches long. If you’re planning a bunch of weekend trips this summer, the Babybliss is a must-have! It costs about $30 and works just like any other flat iron, except that it heats up to 430 degrees in three seconds flat.

Look, even Oprah endorses this product.  And if you’re like me and unfortunatley plan to spend most of your summer working, stick this thing in your desk drawer to fix your frizzy strands before Happy Hour. It’s great for fixing bangs too. Cheers!

I was in Sephora over the weekend shopping for a Mother’s Day present when I stumbled upon a test bottle of T3 Orlando Pita Renew Dry Conditioner. This is a lightweight dry conditioner that is designed to instantly restore moisture, shine, and softness. No shower needed.

It was so hot outside and my hair was feeling  dry, so I decided give it a try. I can tell you that the fragrance is divine! I sprayed several pumps on my ends. It worked great as a refresher for my locks, but for us PGH girls, I don’t think it can replace normal conditioner. Curls need a lot of moisture to stay frizz-free, and I’m not so sure a dry conditioner of any kind will do the trick.

dove-go-fresh-cool-moisture-ther_1205950204_lrgFor the last month I’ve been using Dove’s Cool Moisture Therapy Shampoo and I have news…it’s good stuff!! I bought one of those huge bottles with a pump at Walmart for $5, mainly because it was such a great deal.

The cucumber and green tea fragrance smells delicious and the gentle formula leaves my hair feeling fresh and revitalized. Definitely PGH worthy!

When I wash my hair with this stuff, I must admit that it is very therapeutic (do I sound cheesy or what!). It’s true though. The clean smell and creamy texture make for a nice shampoo-experience. I recommend for normal to dry hair.

Have you tried this product yet? If so, leave a comment and let us know what you think.

April 13th, 2009AmandaCurly Hair, Hair Salons, Hair Tips, Stylists, Trends

Over the weekend, I had a chance to meet and get a haircut from Vaso Spirou, the owner and master hairstylist and colorist at Vaso Salon. Before I met Vaso, I knew she was the curly hair expert. So I came prepared with a lot of questions! But let me start by saying that this haircut was one of the best I’ve ever received.  If anyone knows curly hair, it’s Vaso. In fact, 90% of her clientele has curly hair. That should tell you something.  Here’s how our convo went…

PGH: More and more curly girls we know want to cut their hair short. Can curlies go short?

Vaso: I love long hair and I find that often time these women who want to go short really just need more shape than anything.  Their hair feels heavy and they crave a new look. I tell them to trust me on the length and if they still want to go shorter, to come back the next day and I’ll cut shorter.

PGH: What is the perfect haircut for curly hair?

Vaso: Every curl is different and therfore I feel that every cut needs to be different. In my salon, I customize each haircut, so really, there is no one perfect haircut for curly hair.

PGH: What’s the first thing curly girls should do once they get out of the shower?

Vaso: Fight the urge to towel dry or look at your missed calls on your cell! Go straight for your hair product and apply to soaking wet hair. This is a must if you want to be frizz-free.

PGH: Speaking of hair products, do you have any favs?

Vaso: I love Alfaparf Semi Di Lino Diamante products. I’ve been using this Italian line for 10 years and it’s fantastic!

PGH: Can you give us some tips on diffusing?

Vaso: I recommend setting your blow-dryer on high heat, medium speed. This way your curl has more time to form. Don’t use your hands! Instead, use the diffuser to cup each section of hair. You can put the diffuser up to your scalp but be carfeul not to burn yourself. Stick to an up-and-down movement instead of left-and-right to prevent frizz.

PGH: You have naturally curly hair but do you ever go straight?

Vaso: I go straight sometimes but I just feel more like myself in my curly hair. It fits me better and curly hair rocks! I am lucky too because my finance likes my curly hair better than straight.

If you are a curly girl (or man) and live in or near Miami, you must go meet Vaso.  And for those of you who don’t live in Miami – you may want to consider making a special trip (she’s that good). Vaso Salon has some great specials too, like a $20 blowout and $40 mani/pedi. Can’t beat that on the beach!
