I have one word to describe this haircut…mullet! I promise, I am not exaggerating in the least. Half my head is short, the other long. And the short part is very puffy on top. What does this sound like to you?

So…how did this happen? I tried a new salon down the street from my apartment a day before I left for Vegas for a work conference. I asked for a trim, I left with a mullet. Simple as that. Oh, and I was also given bangs aka “face framers.” C’mon lady!! I have thick , curly hair. Bangs!?

Ok, enough ranting for now. This whole mullet experience has taught me a lot, starting with how to accept that yes indeed, I have a bad haircut, and how to deal.

1. Realize that it’s just hair, no one is dying, it will (eventually) grow back.

2. Call the salon to complain. Ask if there’s anything they can do to a) fix the cut or b) refund your money.

3. Understand that some cuts cannot be fixed, they just need time to grow out. Consider extensions if it’s really bad – and make the salon comp them.

4. Invest in a lot of bobby pins and learn how to perfect the poof. Great for disguising bangs or “face framers.”

5. Experiment with some new styles. Chances are your old styling ways won’t work for the time being. First things first, see how your hair dries naturally, then go from there. Perhaps add a headband or other hair accessory into the mix.

6. Keep hair pulled off your face in a clean ponytail or bun. I was using a large clip to create a simple twist and then blew dry the short pieces around my face that were too short to fit.

7. Give the salon and stylist honest reviews on Yelp or Google. In other words, slam them for giving you a mullet…I mean, bad haircut. This will make you feel better (I promise).

It’s starting to get humid and hot outside, so why even waste your time trying to achieve perfectly straight, frizz-free locks. It’s just not worth the time if you ask us.

Instead, aim for beach-worthy waves. Our friends at NaturallyCurly.com sent us some simple tips for achieving the most popular look this summer. Read on!

The least invasive and probably easiest method to create beach curls is simple braiding. Start with damp or wet hair, and braid into a single braid or several chunky braids. Let hair completely dry – typically overnight – and undo the braid. Voila! – instant beach waves. Smooth flyaways with oil, butter or moisturizing crème.

For shorter curls, try pincurls or knots to achieve a similar braid-effect.

Use large rollers at the ends to achieve a more voluptuous wave.

For a looser curl, try a Keratin treatment (a smoothing, not straightening process). Though hair will appear straighter at first, simply add your usual styling product and blow dry with a diffuser while scrunching hair.

Pravana offers a new Beach Wave process that provides long-lasting, soft, natural, undulating waves. This process uses Cysteamine, a natural amino acid that realigns the hair’s internal bonds to create a soft, sensuous wave.

For more information on these techniques and more, check out one of our favorite sites, NaturallyCurly.com

My boyfriend and I hosted a BBQ yesterday and the rain was no fun. Not only was I forced to block the food from getting soaked…but also my hair! Celebs at the Golden Globes last night must have felt my pain. Keeping your hair lookin’ good in the rain is a challenge…especially if you have PGH. Lucky for us, celeb hairstylist Philip Pelusi sent us some tips on weathering the storm during a special event. I will use these next time so that I don’t have to choose which to save…food or hair.

Check the weather report a few days in advance so you can plan to wear your hair up or down. If rain is in the forecast, plan ahead to wear your hair either all up or half up and half down.

Pulling hair into an updo or half upsweep is the best strategy to stay looking good in rainy conditions because hair is already curled, pinned and sprayed in place. If it gets rained on a bit, hair can simply air dry in place, and it is also easier to keep an updo dry under an umbrella.

If you wear your hair down and are caught by surprise, make sure to bring a small emergency kit in your purse to a special event with a few hair pins, a ponytail holder and a small purse size hair spray. If hair gets wet, go for a quick style change. Pull hair back into the ponytail and wrap hair around the ponytail holder and secure into place with the hair pins. Mist with spray.

2) Cut your hair when dry.
3) Cut hair in tiny sections – angle the scissors at 45-degrees and use the tip of the scissors to snip just a few strands at a time.

On hot humid days, a messy bun is just the trick for on-the-go gals. This look is actually much easier to create with thick hair than thin. We have the perfect solution for dressing up your messy bun – a pretty hair piece.

We like this hair pic from France Luxe. This beautiful piece simply slips into the side of your messy bun and creates an elegant, more put together look.

Want an even easier solution? Try a decorative ponytail holder. We love Brighton’s selection, like this Garden Bloom Ponytail Holder which comes in a couple different colors. When styling your messy bun, pull out a couple pieces in front and secure the rest of your hair back using a decorative hair tie. View the entire Brighton collection here.

We all know that we shouldn’t wash our hair everyday, but it’s not as easy for us curlies. Our strands get knotty and frizzy, and all we want to do is jump in shower and shampoo! So, we decided to put together a guide on how to tame your second day mane.

1. Keep hair down when you go to sleep. Overnight hair ties cause major creases and can even cause breakage.

2. In the shower, wear hair up in a shower cap like Benefit’s Satin Cap or use a Tassi. Point the shower nozzle downward so you can shave your legs without getting your hair soaked.

3. Don’t even attempt to brush. Instead, smooth out frizz and detangle with a couple drops of serum like Ken Paves Shine Serum.

4. For stubborn strands that shape your face, re-wet using a spray bottle and re-style like your normally do.

5. If oily hair is your issue, try using a dry shampoo or The All Nighter Styling Powder – a color matched, gently scented silk powder that absorbs excess oil.

6. Still not happy? Before you throw your hair up in a bun, try a headband or a pretty hair clip. France Luxe has a great selection!

Kimberly Clo recently released her new DVD, Now You Know How…To Blow-Dry Your Hair.

Kimberly has a complete list of celebrity clientele, including country music star Sara Evans. She is known for her ‘to-die-for’ blow outs which are always done sans flat iron. (Nice to know she doesn’t take the easy way out!)

Want to know how to keep your blow-out lookin’ salon-worthy even longer?

Kimberly says to “take each hair section and blow dry it all the way until it shines, not just to the point where it feels dry. This means you got to go a few strokes past when you think you’re done. Then go back over the hair section once more for good measure and enjoy!”

Her 65-minute “how to” DVD covers everything from the best tools to blow dry techniques to styling tips for achieving two coveted classic looks – sleek straight and straight with just a hint of bouncy movement. Kimberly demonstrates these tried and true techniques first on models and then on her own hair showing that it really is possible to style yourself. With over 16 years salon experience, Kimberly offers advice and encouragement all along the way.

Every time I take a trip, I am always forced to check a bag because my hair product bottles are more than 3 ounces. I just suck it up and pay $15 each way just so that I can have good hair while traveling. Well, I’ve had enough! I need to start buying travel-size hair products.

I did a search on Google and believe it or not, they’re not that easy to find. There’s very few brands that make travel-size bottles, so you’re usually stuck with whatever the drugstore has.

I was almost ready to quit but then I went on to Ebay and did a search. Eureka! More than 50 items came up, including brands like Matrix, Bumble and Bumble, Big Sexy Hair, L’Occitane, and Fekkai.

Also – DevaCurl makes a complete travel kit. It’s normally about $30 (the cost of checking a bag there and back) but I found it on Amazon for $17.50. Not bad.

Know of any other places or websites to buy carry-on approved hair products? Leave a comment and let us know…thanks!
