How to Say No To Your Hair Stylist

All hair stylists have a way of sucking you in to buy that extra treatment or product. Sometimes this is OK. But they can be very pushy and it’s important to learn how to say the magic words – “No thanks.” Otherwise, you can end up like my friend Carmen who was floored when her bill came out to be more than $400 bucks for cut and color.

1. Go in with a plan – You have to let your hair stylist know what you want done. If you don’t have a plan, many stylists will treat you as their next science experiment. (Been there, done that!)
2. Ask questions – Let’s say your stylist recommends an additional treatment…first question you need to ask is how much does is cost? Then ask if it’s really going to make a big difference? Find out if it’s worth the money.
3. Be honest – If you can’t afford it, than you can’t afford it. Don’t beat around the bush with your stylist.
4. Pay attention – Throughout your appointment, your stylist will most likely explain the products used on your hair and will try to get you to buy them. Ask yourself if this product is really worth it, can you see a big difference and if you can get something similar but way cheaper at the drug store?
5. The easy way out – I sometimes find myself saying “Oh, maybe next time…” when a stylist recommends a new treatment. This will save you maybe once or twice, but if you have a steady stylist beware of using this escape route too often.
