Curly Hair History from Allure Mag

Posted on August 4th, 2008 by Amanda  |  Comments Off

I bought the August issue of Allure Magazine today to read at the beach and they have a whole page devoted to curly hair history. It’s really quite interesting, dating back to the 1600′s. Here are some milestones:
  • 1660: After the civil war, judges started wearing long, curly wigs in court.
  • 1872: Marcel Grateu created the first curling iron.
  • 1906: Took 6 hours to set one of the first perms.
  • 1983: Hairstylist Ouidad opened NYC’s first salon specializing in curly hair.
  • 1996: 10 new frizz and curl control products hit store shelves.
  • 2007: 70 similar products being sold in stores.
  • 2008: 1,000 products at stores that claim to eliminate frizz.

Want more? Pick-up a copy of Allure and flip to page 52.

Want a New Hair Color…”Down There?”

Posted on August 1st, 2008 by Amanda  |  1 Comment »

Remember that hilarious episode of Sex and The City from Season 6 when Samantha dyes her pubic hair after she finds a gray hair?

I never knew there was such a thing as hair dye for your “hair down there” until I read this article on Oprah.com. The product is called betty, Color For the Hair Down There and just for the record, I have not tried it.

The best part is that they sell the dye in hot pink and call it FUN betty! How great is that? I want to know what men think about all this. Please, leave a comment and let us know if this is something you’d want your lady to try out.

Mane Squeeze

Posted on July 31st, 2008 by Amanda  |  Comments Off

While I think it’s always best to wear your hair down and show off those big, beautiful curls, there are times when you just need to put your hair in a ponytail…especially if you live in the Miami heat!!

The problem with thick hair is finding an elastic that will hold it up..and more. It has to be stretchy, easy to use, comfortable, and when you take it out, it shouldn’t take half your hair with it!

Goody makes great hair accessories, from clips to headbands. They have these Ouchless elastics that are stable enough to hold up our mane. And your hair is sure to remain stuck to your head and not wrapped around your hair tie. I love Goody because they make ties in all of the colors found in the rainbow, they are inexpensive, and they are found at your local pharmacy.

Project Runway’s Stylist Sounds Off

Posted on July 31st, 2008 by Amanda  |  1 Comment »

Who loves Project Runway?! Me, Me, Me! BellaSugar had the chance to interview Jeanie Syfu, the lead stylist for Bravo’s Project Runway. We posted the interview below. Jeanie thinks big afro’s are beautiful and so do we! Check out more on Bravo’s hit show here and keep watching Wednesday’s at 9 pm ET.

Q: How do you work with the contestants to devise the looks for their runway challenges?

JS: They come down with a sketch, a swatch of fabric, or a reference, depending on what the challenge was. Because we only have 30 minutes to get everything done, we try to make the consultation as quick as possible. We just start having a conversation about ideas what we can do with the model’s hair — if the model’s hair would be able to do the style and if the time allows it. It’s really fun. You should see how quickly they’re able to make these garments, because so much drama goes on upstairs that we have no idea what’s going on. So, sometimes [the designers] come down, sometimes they don’t, and sometimes we just try to do the guessing game and figure out what it’s actually going to look like. We just do what we can in the time that we have.To find out which hairstyles are the go-to choices when time’s running out, read more.
Q: So there are some contestants who just go up into the last minute and don’t have the model’s hair done at all?

JS: We’ve come very close to that. It is so crazy back there — sometimes they are counting the seconds getting the last zipper done, or something comes apart and they need that extra 10 minutes to finish. Sometimes they never make it down and the models just put it in a ponytail or a bun. It always seems to work out in the end.

Q: What is it like for you and your team to create those hairstyles so quickly, knowing that they’re going to be seen by millions of people?

JS: It’s always fun. I have such a great team! We’ve all done plenty of shows during Fashion Week, and we’re all very familiar with how things run back there and how quick you have to be. On a normal day at a photo shoot, we would have plenty of time to prepare. Given that we only have 30 minutes — sometimes less —to get something done, it’s a challenge even for us to get the hair looking perfect in the short amount of time that we have. So, it’s really hard but we always end up making it beautiful. I love it. It’s exciting.

Q: The designer and the model often come in with their own ideas. Do you ever have to say, “That sounds great, but in a half hour there’s no way it’s going to happen”?

JS: Yes, it’s happened to me many times. Many times. We have a lot of ethnic models this season, so we had one girl with this huge afro. Sometimes [the designers] would want a straight blow-out, and we would just be like, “That is so impossible.”

Q: Yeah, and I think that afros are so beautiful anyway.

JS: Totally! I’m all about like making the afro bigger, but sometimes the design didn’t really call for that.

Trend Alert – Feather Headbands

Posted on July 30th, 2008 by Amanda  |  4 Comments »

Remember when tiara’s were the “it” hair accessory a couple years ago? Paris Hilton tried bringing the tiara back, but I don’t recall it really catching on.

Anyway, I love to browse Urban Outfitters every now and then because they always have such fun stuff, not to mention great sales! They even have a section just for hair accessories. These small wonders are usually no more than $20 bucks and provide a cheap and easy way to disguise a bad hair day.
Looks like feather headbands may be the next tiara. Thoughts?

Total Beauty’s Worst-Rated Hair Products

Posted on July 29th, 2008 by Amanda  |  Comments Off

One of my favorite beauty websites is Total Beauty. All of the product reviews are very helpful! They just posted The Worst Hair Care Products of the Week. Believe it or not, cheap products weren’t the only ones getting a thumbs down. Biosilk Hydrating Shampoo ($10.99) and Wen Sweet Almond Mint Texture Balm ($18) were included on this loser list.
I have tried other Biosilk products before and have really liked them. I’ve never tried any Wen products but I’ve read good things on other blogs.
Ladies, have better luck with any of these products? Leave us a comment and let us know.

The Morning After

Posted on July 28th, 2008 by Amanda  |  2 Comments »

It’s Saturday night…your hair looks great, that new dress fits just right, and your dancing shoes are ready to take you through the night. You party the night away and have a fabulous time. The next morning, hair all over your face, groggy and most likely hungover, you take a deep breath and inhale the lovely smells of……1,000 old ashtrays?!

I hate leaving a club or bar only to discover that the club has left with me, in my hair. Especially when I just washed it right before! Not only is it bad to wash your hair everyday, but it’s a pain in my boo-tay as well! But the smell of last night’s ashtray is not one that I care to inhale all day long. So, what to do? Get your hands on some hair perfume!

We all use perfume to make our bodies smell fresh, so why not do the same to our hair? One of my good friends introduced me to Jonathan Redo–this product freshens up dirty hair and leaves a nice, clean scent behind (Jonathan is the creator of many other beauty products, too). I love it because the scent is not overpowering at all and it can also be used on my skin! Find it at your local beauty supply store or Sephora.

Anyone else got hair perfume recommendations?

Salon Selectives Rebranding

Posted on July 26th, 2008 by Amanda  |  1 Comment »

Ok, I know most hair commercials are cheesy but this one is REALLY cheesy! Salon Selectives was really popular back in the 80′s and 90′s and now I think they are trying to make a comeback. Check out their new commercial and let us know what you think. It has over 1,000 views on YouTube right now and a 4-star rating…

Curly Hair 101

Posted on July 24th, 2008 by Amanda  |  Comments Off

We haven’t done a post before on curly hair basics…until now. If you can’t seem to get your styling routine down, check out these tips on Sally Beauty Supply’s website. They say that a common mistake is “too much touching while drying.” (I definitely do this…ops!)

I haven’t been to Sally’s in forever. Anyone want to make Saturday a beauty day? We could hit up Ulta, Sally’s…where else?
