New York Magazine is blogging from Paris Fashion Week and posted some great pictures today from the Comme des Garçons show. I have to admit, this big hair may be too big even for me.

Thoughts??

Right This Way to the Lay-Down Shampoo Bed

Posted on October 2nd, 2008 by Amanda  |  Comments Off

Just yesterday we were introduced to lay-down shampoo beds by Thomas Chase Hairdressing, an upscale, chic salon in Santa Monica, CA. This big comfy chair looks like a little bit of heaven if you ask me. How bad I wanted to jump on a 5 hour cross-country flight to test one out.

Can you imagine – no awkward neck pain when you lay back in the sink? And look at all that room to stretch out. Besides being able to completely relax in one of these shampoo beds, everyone at Thomas Chase is treated to a ten minute head and neck massage while they get their hair washed.
If you don’t live in Santa Monica but still want to try one of these heavenly beds out, you may have a bit of a problem finding a salon that carries them. We did some research and not many exist. Are you one of the lucky ones who have been shampooed in one of these beds? Let us know how it was!

When it comes to thick, curly or wavy hair that tends to frizz (a.k.a. Premium Grade Hair) choosing the right shampoo is very important. Listen, PGH is thirsty! We can’t say it enough! That’s why when selecting a shampoo you should look for words like moisturizing, nourishing, or hydrating.

Protect Yourself and Your Hair

Posted on September 29th, 2008 by Amanda  |  Comments Off

Breast Cancer Awareness Month will kick-off in just two days. Every year designers release a new pink product or line in which a portion of the proceeds go to a non-profit, like the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. One of the items we really like this year is Bloomingdale’s exclusive umbrellas (see picture to the left). No one likes the rain to ruin their hairstyle! So, now you can protect your hair and support finding a cure for breast cancer. Bloomingdale’s will be donating all net proceeds from the sale of this umbrella to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and awareness programs. See where your money is going to at bcrfcure.org. You can also check out Cosmo’s list of even more fashionable items for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Liz’s Limp Hair

Posted on September 26th, 2008 by Amanda  |  Comments Off

My roommate Liz came home today after work with a heavy load on her shoulders, literally! Last week she went to the Kiehl’s store on Lincoln Road and was convinced to spend about $50 bucks on Rice & Wheat Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner. Now, let me remind you that Liz does not have big hair. She has shoulder length, thin hair – so she wanted some umph, understandably!

Even though this product says on the bottle “For flat, thin or lifeless (a bit harsh?) hair,” Liz is not happy. She says it feels oily, weighed down and ironically, lifeless. There’s no shine and there’s no volume. On the upside, she also purchased Kiehl’s Olive Fruit Oil Deeply Reparative Hair Pak. This product she actually likes but only for her tips.
Let’s just say Liz fell hook, line and sinker at Kiehl’s. The next time she purchases anything with the name rice or wheat, it will be from a grocery store! Does anyone have recommendations on products for those of us who do not have Premium Grade Hair?

Hair Headaches

Posted on September 24th, 2008 by Amanda  |  1 Comment »

Did you know that your big hair may be the cause of your headaches? I’m recalling my high school prom days when my hair was stacked up 10 inches on my head! But, it doesn’t have to be a fancy up-do to cause pain. Any style that puts strain on your hair follicles can cause a headache. Here are some of my tips to keep in mind:

* Whether it’s a ponytail or braid, don’t pin your hair too tightly.

*Be gentle when using bobbypins. Those things can really hurt your poor scalp.

*Let your hair down when you go to sleep.

*Watch out for products that have a really strong fragrance. The smell could get to you after a while.

*Avoid wearing plastic headbands for long periods of time.

*Hats that are too tight are also no good.

If it’s too late and your headache is here, check out Headaches.org for some relief tips.
