I have one word to describe this haircut…mullet! I promise, I am not exaggerating in the least. Half my head is short, the other long. And the short part is very puffy on top. What does this sound like to you?

So…how did this happen? I tried a new salon down the street from my apartment a day before I left for Vegas for a work conference. I asked for a trim, I left with a mullet. Simple as that. Oh, and I was also given bangs aka “face framers.” C’mon lady!! I have thick , curly hair. Bangs!?

Ok, enough ranting for now. This whole mullet experience has taught me a lot, starting with how to accept that yes indeed, I have a bad haircut, and how to deal.

1. Realize that it’s just hair, no one is dying, it will (eventually) grow back.

2. Call the salon to complain. Ask if there’s anything they can do to a) fix the cut or b) refund your money.

3. Understand that some cuts cannot be fixed, they just need time to grow out. Consider extensions if it’s really bad – and make the salon comp them.

4. Invest in a lot of bobby pins and learn how to perfect the poof. Great for disguising bangs or “face framers.”

5. Experiment with some new styles. Chances are your old styling ways won’t work for the time being. First things first, see how your hair dries naturally, then go from there. Perhaps add a headband or other hair accessory into the mix.

6. Keep hair pulled off your face in a clean ponytail or bun. I was using a large clip to create a simple twist and then blew dry the short pieces around my face that were too short to fit.

7. Give the salon and stylist honest reviews on Yelp or Google. In other words, slam them for giving you a mullet…I mean, bad haircut. This will make you feel better (I promise).

Special thanks to Suave for sending these over. Here’s how to re-create Sofia Vergara’s hairstyle from the 2010 Emmy Awards.

1. Start off with a good foundation using Suave Professionals Almond and Shea Butter Shampoo and Conditioner. This will deliver moisture to the hair before styling.

2. Before blow drying, apply a small amount of Suave Professionals Healthy Curls Mousse to towel dried hair. This will help shape the curls and hold them in place.

3. Next, spray Suave Freeze Hold Hairspray onto small sections of hair before wrapping the section around a 2 inch barrel curling iron. For loose, voluminous waves, don’t close the tongue of the curling iron!

4.Finish off the look with the Suave Professionals Volumizing Finishing Spray. The lightweight formula will keep your curls intact without weighing them down.

As promised, here are the steps to re-create Rose Byrne’s Emmy 2010 hairstyle – styled by Harry Josh, John Frieda International Creative Consultant.

First you should know that Harry prepped Rose’s hair for one week before the red carpet by prescribing John Frieda Root Awakening Health Infusing Shampoo & Conditioner ($6.49 each). You can purchase this at your local drugstore or Target/Walmart.

Now on to the steps…

1. Luxurious Volume Bountiful Body Mousse was applied to Rose’s wet hair and then blew it out using a boar-bristle brush. The mousse helped Harry achieve high volume hair that would easily mold into the curls he was about to create—and the product gave a great texturized base, which Harry needed to create the look.

*Note to naturally curlies – you may be able to skip steps one and two if your curls are already defined.

2. Harry used a 3/4-inch curling iron throughout her hair and pulled a portion of the curls into a ponytail at the crown of her head.

3. He then pulled her hair into a high bun, pulling out individual curls for a Grecian-inspired style with a modern twist.

4. Harry secured the style by spraying Luxurious Volume All-Out Hold Hairspray to maintain volume and hold.

While achieving volume is never my problem, I know a lot of ladies out there hate limp locks. Hope these tips help!

* Use a volumizing conditioner and shampoo: Volumizing products (such as the P2 InCrease Volumizze Shampoo and Conditioner) are formulated not to weigh hair down. Be careful to apply conditioner only to ends.

* Give Your Roots a Boost: Apply a root lifter before blowdrying, from midshaft to root (try Mod di Phy Define Root Lift Volumize Spray)

* Blow dry for “oomph”: Lift sections of hair toward the sky as you blow-dry, directing hot air toward your scalpl.

* Don’t blow-dry upside-down: To keep volume moderized, do not flip your head over

* Back-brush instead of tease: Instead of teasing your tresses with a comb, use a flat-backed brush, which will damage your hair less

* Mist hairspray – Heavy hairspray is more likely to weigh hair down instead of give it volume. Spritz hairspray in to the air and walk through it (try Mod di Phy Fluid Shaping & Finishing Spray)

Aussie celebrity hair stylist, Sarah Potempa, gave us the official Glee steps.

This is a great take on a traditional braid, but with a twist.

Step 1: Spritz Aussie’s Leave-In Conditioner spray on the fringe that you will twist.

Step 2: Take two pieces and cross one over the other (and, surprisingly, do NOT twist). With each piece, add a little hair from the root of the loose hair.

Step 3: Follow half way down and secure with 2 bobby pins or a clear elastic underneath the top layer of the hair.

Step 4: Curl the hair with a 1” curling iron and spray with Aussie’s Sprunch Spray.

Twi-hards are upon us. In lieu of this Friday’s opening date, it will be hard to turn your head without seeing some form of New Moon mania.

The gang has been making their worldwide rounds promoting their new film and I can’t imagine how hard it has to be maintaining red-carpet ready hair at all times. Kristen Stewart seems to be doing a good job at this. She was wearing her normally super short locks in a longer way for Monday night’s big premiere in LA.

I personally love her no matter what she does because she isn’t afraid to take risks and she has a pretty nonchalant attitude about what people think of her. Self confidence is always sexy.

Don’t ya just hate struggling to hide your bobby pins? Well now you don’t have to! Bobby pins have been spotted on the runways as a hot fashion accessory. Up there with heabands in fact.

Jeni Hoover, owner and stylist at Pearl Hair & Make-up Studio, gave us a great how-to on how you can recreate this look. I haven’t tried this yet but I plan to try it out this weekend for a wedding. Enjoy!!

1. Make a side part in the your hair, we will be working with the stronger side.

2. Using your curling iron, make horizontal barrel curls below the part, spraying a setting spray on each section, combing through, wrapping all hair around iron, and then sliding it off the rod and pinning against your scalp with a pincurl clip. Hair should be in a similar shape as when it was on the curling iron.

3. Do this down to your ear, there should be about 4-5 curls pinned parallel to your part.

4. Spray all curls with hairspray.

5. Once curls have cooled, take down and brush thoroughly, roots to ends. This pulls out the curl a bit, creating a wave, and also joining the curls together into one piece.

6. Use some polishing creme, or a light pomade, to smooth this section and create one large waved section.

7. Position this wave with a bit of slack and bring it and the rest of your hair back into a pony tail or loose bun.

8. While keeping the natural shape in the waved section, slide bobby pins in from the front of the wave, about 1/2 -1 inch apart. Pin the whole wave starting a few inches from your part. This will hold the wave in place as well.

Step 2: Curl hair with a 1 1/4 inch barrel curling iron, and spray with TRESemmé Frizz Shield Finishing Spray.
Step 3: Pull hair back, making it tighter on one side exposing the ear, into a mid-height ponytail and wrap to form a bun. Criss cross bobby pins to secure.
Step 4: Finish with TRESemmé TRES Two Hair spray to hold the look.

Sheer black ribbon woven into the hair in a spontaneous and organic way was the look at Jason Wu’s Fashion Week show. Lead hairstylist Odile Gilbert for Aveda wanted a style that is feminine, yet contemporary and edgy.

Photo: Jon Gurinsky

“The collection is rich with different textures and materials, so Jason and I worked together to create a hair look that plays with this idea,” said Gilbert. “The key to recreating this look is to have fun and to be spontaneous. Start by blow drying smooth, create a ponytail with the back section of hair, and weave ribbon and hair against the head, pinning in place as you go. This look can be playful to wear during the day or elegant with an edge for the evening.”

Here are Aveda’s steps to re-create this look:

Step 1: Apply Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Style-Prep Smoother throughout damp hair and blow dry straight.

Step 2: Work Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Glossing Straightener through hair to achieve a straight, smooth, glossy finish.

Step 3: Separate hair into front and back sections. Pull back section into a tight ponytail to the middle/back of the head and secure with a bungee elastic.

Step 4: Tie a 7-foot long piece of 6-inch wide, black horse hair ribbon around the ponytail. Secure each end to the head on either side of the pony with bobby pins the color of hair.

Step 5: Mist the entire head with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for added shine and workable hold.

Step 6: Weave front section of hair back in smaller, 1-inch pieces, over the ribbon, securing against the head with bobby pins. Continue weaving hair and ribbon, creating loops with the ribbon around back of the head, until all hair has been worked through.

Step 7: Weave ponytail in 1-inch sections in loops throughout the ribbon, securing against the head with bobby pins, until all hair and ribbon are used. Hair and ribbon are looped together spontaneously, creating a sculptural, voluminous updo. Fray the ends of the ribbon and leave exposed.

Step 8: Spray with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for finish and hold.
