sal4Celebrity hairstylist Philip Pelusi, who is well-known for his signature Volumetric® haircutting technique, sent us some tips on how-to get volume without the 1980’s  “big hair” look. While achieving volume is never my problem, I know a lot of ladies out there hate limp locks. Hope these tips help!

    * Use a volumizing conditioner and shampoo: Volumizing products (such as the P2 InCrease Volumizze Shampoo and Conditioner) are formulated not to weigh hair down. Be careful to apply conditioner only to ends.

    * Give Your Roots a Boost: Apply a root lifter before blowdrying, from midshaft to root (try Mod di Phy Define Root Lift Volumize Spray)

    * Blow dry for “oomph”: Lift sections of hair toward the sky as you blow-dry, directing hot air toward your scalpl.

    * Don’t blow-dry upside-down: To keep volume moderized, do not flip your head over

    * Back-brush instead of tease: Instead of teasing your tresses with a comb, use a flat-backed brush, which will damage your hair less

    * Mist hairspray – Heavy hairspray is more likely to weigh hair down instead of give it volume. Spritz hairspray in to the air and walk through it (try Mod di Phy Fluid Shaping & Finishing Spray)

hairWant to know how to recreate Quinn’s soft waves? Aussie celebrity hair stylist, Sarah Potempa, gave us the official Glee steps.

This is a great take on a traditional braid, but with a twist.

Step 1: Spritz Aussie’s Leave-In Conditioner spray on the fringe that you will twist.

Step 2: Take two pieces and cross one over the other (and, surprisingly, do NOT twist). With each piece, add a little hair from the root of the loose hair.

Step 3: Follow half way down and secure with 2 bobby pins or a clear elastic underneath the top layer of the hair.

Step 4: Curl the hair with a 1” curling iron and spray with Aussie’s Sprunch Spray.

Twi-hards are upon us. In lieu of this Friday’s opening date, it will be hard to turn your head without seeing some form of New Moon mania.

The gang has been making their worldwide rounds promoting their new film and I can’t imagine how hard it has to be maintaining red-carpet ready hair at all times. Kristen Stewart seems to be doing a good job at this. She was wearing her normally super short locks in a longer way for Monday night’s big premiere in LA.

I personally love her no matter what she does because she isn’t afraid to take risks and she has a pretty nonchalant attitude about what people think of her. Self confidence is always sexy.

Bellasugar.com has 5 easy steps to help you recreate this look. Click here for the full story.

    P.S. I’m on Team Edward!

-1Don’t ya just hate struggling to hide your bobby pins? Well now you don’t have to! Bobby pins have been spotted on the runways as a hot fashion accessory. Up there with heabands in fact.

Jeni Hoover, owner and stylist at Pearl Hair & Make-up Studio, gave us a great how-to on how you can recreate this look. I haven’t tried this yet but I plan to try it out this weekend for a wedding. Enjoy!!

    1. Make a side part in the your hair, we will be working with the stronger side.

    2. Using your curling iron, make horizontal barrel curls below the part, spraying a setting spray on each section, combing through, wrapping all hair around iron, and then sliding it off the rod and pinning against your scalp with a pincurl clip. Hair should be in a similar shape as when it was on the curling iron.

    3. Do this down to your ear, there should be about 4-5 curls pinned parallel to your part.

    4. Spray all curls with hairspray.

    5. Once curls have cooled, take down and brush thoroughly, roots to ends. This pulls out the curl a bit, creating a wave, and also joining the curls together into one piece.

    6. Use some polishing creme, or a light pomade, to smooth this section and create one large waved section.

    7. Position this wave with a bit of slack and bring it and the rest of your hair back into a pony tail or loose bun.

    8. While keeping the natural shape in the waved section, slide bobby pins in from the front of the wave, about 1/2 -1 inch apart. Pin the whole wave starting a few inches from your part. This will hold the wave in place as well.

Celeb hairstylist Mara Rosznak gives us the steps. BTW, did anyone see Amy on the Today Show last week? I almost peed my pants watching her interview.

Step 1: Apply TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Foaming Mousse to damp hair, create a deep side part, and blow dry with a round brush.

Step 2: Curl hair with a 1 1/4 inch barrel curling iron, and spray with TRESemmé Frizz Shield Finishing Spray.
Step 3: Pull hair back, making it tighter on one side exposing the ear, into a mid-height ponytail and wrap to form a bun. Criss cross bobby pins to secure.
Step 4: Finish with TRESemmé TRES Two Hair spray to hold the look.

Sheer black ribbon woven into the hair in a spontaneous and organic way was the look at Jason Wu’s Fashion Week show. Lead hairstylist Odile Gilbert for Aveda wanted a style that is feminine, yet contemporary and edgy.

    Photo: Jon Gurinsky

“The collection is rich with different textures and materials, so Jason and I worked together to create a hair look that plays with this idea,” said Gilbert. “The key to recreating this look is to have fun and to be spontaneous. Start by blow drying smooth, create a ponytail with the back section of hair, and weave ribbon and hair against the head, pinning in place as you go. This look can be playful to wear during the day or elegant with an edge for the evening.”

Here are Aveda’s steps to re-create this look:

Step 1: Apply Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Style-Prep Smoother throughout damp hair and blow dry straight.

Step 2: Work Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Glossing Straightener through hair to achieve a straight, smooth, glossy finish.

Step 3: Separate hair into front and back sections. Pull back section into a tight ponytail to the middle/back of the head and secure with a bungee elastic.

Step 4: Tie a 7-foot long piece of 6-inch wide, black horse hair ribbon around the ponytail. Secure each end to the head on either side of the pony with bobby pins the color of hair.

Step 5: Mist the entire head with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for added shine and workable hold.

Step 6: Weave front section of hair back in smaller, 1-inch pieces, over the ribbon, securing against the head with bobby pins. Continue weaving hair and ribbon, creating loops with the ribbon around back of the head, until all hair has been worked through.

Step 7: Weave ponytail in 1-inch sections in loops throughout the ribbon, securing against the head with bobby pins, until all hair and ribbon are used. Hair and ribbon are looped together spontaneously, creating a sculptural, voluminous updo. Fray the ends of the ribbon and leave exposed.

Step 8: Spray with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for finish and hold.

image003More how-to hair from the 2009 MTV VMAs! Twilight’s Ashley Greene worked the red carpet as an MTV fashion correspondent, showing off her long, wavy locks styled by Pantene Celebrity Stylist, Danilo. Here’s how you can re-create this look:

    1. Starting on wet hair, Danilo sprayed the Pantene Pro-V Root Lifter Gel on her crown to prime her hair for a voluminous shape on top

    2. Since Ashley was stationed outside on the red carpet, Danilo combed through the Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Ultra Smoothing Balm from the mid-shaft of her hair to the ends to keep it looking sleek and frizz-free despite the humidity

    3. After applying the balm, Danilo blow-dried her hair straight

    4. Danilo then pulled the top half of her hair back, using his classic French Lacing technique to give her healthy volume on top while leaving a dramatic side part for contrast

    5. Then he used a large iron to create her loose flowing curls underneath, combing when necessary

    6. To hold the look in place, Danilo sprayed her hair with the Pantene Pro-V Texture Hairspray for moveable texture while she worked the carpet

ks2ksKristen Stewart rocked the stage at the VMA’s with her edgy, yet classic short ‘do styled by Celebrity Stylist for Pantene, Hallie Bowman. Want to recreate this look? Here are the  steps.

    1. Hallie started by shampooing and conditioning Kristen’s hair with a moisturizing formula to create a good base for styling

    2. She began by cutting bangs to create roundness around the cheekbones, a look that is complimentary of her heart shape face

    3. Hallie applied the Pantene Pro-V Volume Root Lifter Gel from root to tip to begin building volume, as well as the Pantene Pro-V Texture Spray Wax to make hair more malleable for styling

    4. Then, she blow dried Kristen’s hair while brushing it away from the scalp, periodically flipping her hair over to ensure lots of volume at the crown

    5. Hallie then pinned sections of her hair back with bobby pins to secure it away from the face, leaving some pieces around the face to give the illusion of a bob with bangs – a nod to the bowl cut, but with a modern feel

    6. To polish off the look, Hallie used the Pantene Pro-V Smooth Serum to give Kristen’s hair long lasting shine for the night

CSiriano_Aveda_SS10_6Low, sleek ponytails adorned with a textured bouquet of waves were spotted at Christain Siriano’s Spring/Summer 2010 Fashion Week show. Very different, we must admit! This look was created by Antoinette Beenders, Vice President Global Creative Director for Aveda.

As you can see, hair is sleek and groomed on each side of the head and through the ponytail, with a slightly rough, matte finish on top and elegant, textured waves pinned above the pony.

“Christian and I worked together to create a hair look that reflects the inspiration behind his collection: waves and the ocean, with shimmering silks, silvers, and blues. I call this look the “wave” because of the back-combed wave that floats atop the ponytail. Since Christian is a young designer, the hair look is elegant yet very modern.”

Here’s Aveda’s steps to recreate this look:

Step 1: Create a deep side part. Draw a horseshoe-shaped section of hair along the top of the head, from each brow-line. Isolate this section of hair and pin in place with a single-pronged hair clip.

Step 2: Pull the bottom half of hair into a ponytail and secure with a bungee elastic. Divide ponytail into sections with fingers and spray with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for workable hold.

CSiriano_Aveda_SS10_7Step 3: Use a flat iron to straighten the ponytail section by section, creating a smooth, sleek finish.

Step 4: Unclip the top section of hair and comb it back and over the ponytail. Sprinkle Aveda Pure Abundance™ Hair Potion and massage into hair to create volume and matte, rough texture.

Step 5: Working with the same top section, divide hair into smaller pieces and spray with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray. Wrap each piece of hair around a ceramic Curl Rod, creating spirals, until the entire top section of hair has been curled.

Step 6: Brush through spirals, loosening curls into soft waves. Loosely backcomb waves to create fullness, volume and texture, and shorten the length of hair.

Step 7: Pin the sides and ends of wavy hair against the head, close to the base of the ponytail. Hair is sculpted into a voluminous, undulating chignon adorning the ponytail.

Step 8: Work Aveda Light Elements™ Texturizing Creme into palms. Smooth hair along the sides of the head and above the ears to create a sleekness and shine.

Step 9: Finish the look with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for shine and hold.
